Can the spaces we live in make us healthier? Outside In explores the forgotten connections between nature and home, and the people bringing them back together.

The story

As more of our lives unfold inside buildings of steel and glass, what happens to our connection with the natural world? Outside In explores biophilia — our innate need for nature — and the growing movement to bring that connection into the places where we live and work.

The film meets architects, researchers and homeowners exploring how light, materials, colour, texture and natural surroundings shape the experience of a space. At its heart is interior designer and mother Jennell Stanley, who is building a biophilic home with her young family’s wellbeing in mind.

Moving between homes, workplaces and the landscapes around them, Outside In asks how design can help us live with greater awareness of nature — and what we lose when we shut it out.

Project milestones

A TELUS Originals documentary, Outside In screened at the Architecture & Design Film Festival in Vancouver in November 2022 and the Architecture + Design Film Festival in Winnipeg in April 2023. Its international life continues on Shelter, the streaming platform dedicated to architecture and design, which also hosted a conversation with director Danny Berish and built-environment researcher David Fell.
